"LAS TUNAS" PROVINCE

Is one of the eastern provinces with coasts in the north and the south. The north coast is bathed by Old Bahamian Channel and the south coast by Caribbean Sea.

Las Tunas Provinz has the following Municipalities :

Las Tunas, Puerto Padre, Majibacoa, Jobabo, Manatí, Colombia, Amancio Pérez and Jesús Menéndez.

It has not too much elevations and is crossed by some rivers. The most important rivers in the north are Chaparra and Cabrera and in the south are Sevilla, Tana and Jobabo.

Las Tunas is a province with a touristy potential based on the beaches of the Old Bahamian Channel, besides of the perspectives of development of the fishing centres in the southern coast.

When Cuba was discovered, the place where nowadays Las Tunas province is located, was the seat of the powerful political indian chief of Maniabón. From that time there is a beatiful history of religious devotion related with Las Tunas foundation.
The historians say that Alonso de Ojeda arrived at the indian village Cueybá in 1510, after a shipwreck, crossed the coast swamp in an exhaustive march. Alonso came with an image of
María Virgin saved from this disaster. He was a passionate devout to this Virgin.
During the travel he promised to give the image to the first town he find. When he arrived to Cueybá, he gave the image to the indian chief and suggested him to build an hermitage. So was born the first place of adoration of the catholic religion in Cuba.
After 1513, when Bayamo was founded, Las Tunas territory stayed inside of the demarcation of Bayamo town concil and at the end of XVIII century
Las Tunas party in Bayamo was founded with a more independent character. In 1847 it acquired its own personality after its government was created. In 1853 Las Tunas received the Title of City, and today Las Tunas city is capital of the province.
Nowadays the province economy is based on sugar cane production and chemical industry. People hope that the tourism can be important
in the future.

Santa Lucia Beach, located in Camaguey province, is approximately 80 kilometers far from Las Tunas City.
